Art with Heart Displayed

Art with Heart, a traveling art show, will be on display at the Mercy Center Art Gallery during May and June 2008. The show features art created at Bay Area Sisters of Mercy ministries from high schools to retirement homes. Through the theme “Bridging the Generations in Mercy,” the art demonstrates how these ministries share in care and compassion for all ages, especially marginalized populations.

Work includes “Portrait Quilt” from artists at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland, affiliated with Elder Care Alliance. Elders from both assisted living and skilled nursing communities participated in creating watercolor portraits of each other which have been “stitched” into one piece for the show.

Long-time artist and teacher Kay Weber, a Mercy Housing resident, created a paper cut titled “Thinking with a Heart.” The piece carries memories of San Francisco's Haight/Ashbury neighborhood and the summer of love, an era that became a modern myth. The Sisters of Mercy have added work by artist Sisters Genemarie Beegan, Celeste Nuttman, and Katie O’Hanlon to the show in its final appearance at Mercy Center.

Other work displayed is by artists from Alma Via in San Francisco, Union City and San Rafael affiliated with Elder Care Alliance; Mercy Center; Mercy High Schools in Burlingame and San Francisco; and Music at Kohl Mansion.
