| Spiritual Directors' Institute (SDI) is a three-phased program. Phase One is for those who are exploring the ministry of Christian spiritual direction and desiring professional development in the knowledge of spirituality. Phase Two begins the practicum of actually directing and being supervised. It requires an interview for entry. Phase Three continues the practicum and supervision. It also presents a holistic way of working with the movements of the Holy Spirit present in a directee's life. Spiritual Directors' Institute is designed for those seeking formal training in spiritual direction. Participants learn by listening to experienced directors, observing role plays, and participating in peer group discussions.

TOPICS WHICH RECEIVE PARTICULAR ATTENTION:
FORMAT INCLUDES: PRAYER A contemplative attitude is fostered and encouraged by a variety of prayer forms at each session. LARGE & SMALL GROUPS Program will include instructional lectures and practical experiences in a variety of large and small groups. Also, the experience of doing spiritual direction is introduced in Phase Two. PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION Participation assumes a willingness to engage in one's own inner work and to be open to self-disclosure. Effectiveness as a spiritual director is closely linked to one's own spiritual growth.
INSTITUTE TEAM MARY ANN CLIFFORD, RSM, Mercy Center Staff, has a Masters in Theological Studies from Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley. She is a spiritual director, supervisor, retreat director - in both Spanish and English. She has been a missionary in Latin America for 16 years and a formation director for 15 years. Mary Ann is especially interested in the relationship between spirituality and culture, and in the areas of social justice and non-violence.
WILLIAM DOHAR, PH.D., has been involved in pastoral ministry for over twenty years and is presently an Adjunct Staff member at the Mercy Center. He has taught at the Universities of Notre Dame and San Francisco where he also directed Campus Ministry retreats. He currently works as a spiritual director in the Bay Area and teaches in the Religious Studies Department at Santa Clara University and at the University of California, Berkeley.
JANICE FARRELL, M.A., is a Spiritual Director, Supervisor, Retreat Director and Mercy Center adjunct staff member. Her special interests include the formation of spiritual directors, humanistic and transpersonal psychologies; the spirituality of the arts, the earth, and all faith traditions.
CELESTE MARIE NUTTMAN, RSM, M.A., is an artist, liturgical designer, spiritual director, and an educator. She has been a liturgical design consultant in U.S., Canada, and Ireland. Special interests: formation, Jungian mandala interpretation.
LORITA MOFFATT, RSM, received her Masters in Applied Spirituality from the University of San Francisco. Her background includes teaching, parish ministry, and retreat work. She is currently the coordinator of the SDI program at Mercy Center. Sr. Lorita has extensive experience in spiritual direction and supervision. Her special interest and focus is in the formation of spiritual directors and in direct the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.
MARY ANN SCOFIELD, RSM, a Mercy Center staff member, has a Ph.D. in Theology, an MA in Spiritual Direction, and is a founding member of Spiritual Directors International. Mary Ann's ministry is primarily spiritual direction, retreat direction, and the formation of spiritual directors and supervisors. She has also done work in the formation of spiritual directors and supervisors in Alaska, Hawaii, Thailand, Kenya, and Lithuania.
