SUMMER 2012 ZEN SESSHIN

The sesshin can become an inspiring spiritual experience for everyone, irrespective of religious affiliation.

 

Sesshin will include:

  • Orientation for those new to a Zen sesshin.
  • Strict silence and no reading.
  • Dokusan: Private interviews with Fr. Greg.
  • Kinhin: Meditative walking in nature and in the Zendo (meditation room)
  • Teisho: Talks by Fr. Greg.
  • Zazen: Meditating  while seated on a cushion, bench, or chair.

RETREAT LEADER

Fr. Greg began his Zen koan studies in the late 1970's and completed them in 1996. He is an Associate Roshi of the Sanbô-Kyôdan Religious Foundation in Kamakura, Japan. He was given the teaching name of Ryûun-ken (Flowing Cloud) by Yamada Ryôun Roshi, the 4th Abbot of Sanbô-Kyôdan.

On November 11, 2010 Fr. Greg received full transmission as an Authentic Zen Master with the honorific title of Roshi from his teacher, Willigis Jaeger, who is the founder of the Empty Cloud Zen Lineage at Benediktushof, Holtzkirchen, Germany. He is the 46th successor to Master Lin Chin and has been teaching both Zen and Christian Mystical prayer in retreats around the United States. Father Greg is the award-winning author of Listen to the Desert: The Secrets of Spiritual Maturity in the Desert Fathers and Mothers. He directs the East-West Meditation Program at Mercy Center and is its resident teacher.

MEAL SERVICE

Meals include locally-sourced fresh fruit and vegetables, soups, salads and meat entrees. Our meal service department cannot offer all-vegan or other special menus. For your convenience, we have kitchenettes equipped with microwave ovens and refrigerators located on each residence floor. There is a health food store in Burlingame, a short distance from Mercy Center. Guests are welcome to bring special foods or supplements to retreats.
