Through silence, song, and poetry, as well as personal sharing and interactive exercises with nature and each other, we will grow our capacity to take part in the healing of our world. Here, in deep refreshment, we meet the soul's purpose. Each of our lives is played against a backdrop of war-making, hunger, extinctions and increasing climate chaos. The love that binds us to the living body of Earth shows us how to respond to the suffering of our time in ways that bring courage, creativity, and community.

Our days together will be informed by the Work That Reconnects, developed by Joanna over the last 35 years. Acting at the interface between social change and spiritual breakthrough, it draws from living systems theory as well as from ancient teachings of the world's religions. Wear loose clothing with layers for indoors and out, and come prepared to fall in love again with life.

RETREAT LEADER

Joanna Macy, PhD. is known worldwide as a Gaian teacher whose trainings strengthen movements for global justice. Her books include World as Lover, World as Self; Coming Back To Life; Mutual Causality in Buddhist Teachings and Systems Theory, and her memoir Widening Circles, as well as translations of Rilke's poetry.

MEAL SERVICE

Meals include locally-sourced fresh fruit and vegetables, soups, salads and meat entrees. Our meal service department cannot offer all-vegan or other special menus. For your convenience, we have kitchenettes equipped with microwave ovens and refrigerators located on each residence floor. There is a health food store in Burlingame, a short distance from Mercy Center. Guests are welcome to bring special foods or supplements to retreats.
