A SILENT RETREAT IN THE EAST-WEST MEDITATION PROGRAM

November 7-12 (Sunday-Friday)

Begins: Sunday at dinner – 6 pm
Concludes: Friday at lunch – 12:00 noon

The sesshin can become an inspiring spiritual experience for everyone, irrespective of religious affiliation.

Retreat will include:

  • Orientation for those new to a Zen sesshin
  • Strict silence and no reading
  • Dokusan: Private interviews with Fr. Greg
  • Kinhin: Meditating while walking in nature and in the Zendo (meditation room)
  • Teisho: Talk by Fr. Greg
  • Zazen: Meditating  while seated on a cushion, bench, or chair.

Fr. Gregory Mayers, CSSR, a Redemptorist priest, is a Zen Teacher (Zen-kyôshi) of the Sanbô-Kyôdan Religious Foundation in Kamakura, Japan. He was given the teaching name of Ryûun-ken (Flowing Cloud) by Yamada Ryôun Roshi, the 4th Abbot of Sanbô-Kyôdan. He is also a Zen Teacher of the Empty Cloud Zen Lineage in Benediktushof Holzkirken, Germany, and the School of Contemplation, both founded by Willigis Jäger, OSB, Kôun-ken, who is Father Greg’s primary teacher. Father Greg is the award-winning author of Listen to the Desert: The Secrets of Spiritual Maturity in the Desert Fathers and Mothers. He directs the East West Meditation Program at Mercy Center and is its resident teacher.
