Centering Prayer is a method of prayer which prepares us to receive the gift of God’s presence. This was traditionally called contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer is the opening of mind and heart – our whole being – to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words and emotions. Centering Prayer facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer – verbal, mental, or affective prayer – into a receptive prayer of resting in God. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God.

This introduction to Centering Prayer series will include:

  • Instruction in Centering Prayer
  • Practice in a method that fosters contemplative prayer

These sessions will also include the group practice of Centering Prayer.

Ruah Bull is a Spiritual Director in Petaluma, CA who specializes in supporting people on the contemplative journey. She also coordinates programs and retreats for contemplatives through The Journey Center in Santa Rosa. Ruah has been practicing Centering Prayer since 2001, and it is the foundation of her own spiritual path.

Catherine Regan, Ph.D, is a spiritual director, clinical psychologist and staff member of Mercy Center, where she coordinates the Centering Prayer Program. Her great interest is in the renewal of contemplative practices and the benefits of those practices in our individual and collective lives.
