Francis of Assisi dared to take a transformative journey which changed both himself and his world. His inner transformation expressed itself in a love for the poor, a passion for justice and a sense of communion with creation. His journey followed the broad outlines of the hero’s quest, but his deep mysticism turned conventional cultural notions of heroism upside down. This retreat will pass back and forth between the life and times of Francis and our own in search of insight into what it means to live a deep, world-transforming spiritual life in the world today. The retreat will follow a relaxed rhythm of presentations, personal reflection time, small and large group dialogue, prayer/meditation and afternoon free time.

Jim Neafsy has been a retreat leader, spiritual director and teacher of Christian spirituality for more than thirty-five years. He facilitated the Men’s Spirituality Program at Mercy Center from 1995 to 2002. Jim currently works on the staff of the Bread of Life Spiritual Direction Formation Program in Sacramento and does adjunct teaching in Christian Spirituality at Santa Clara University.
